NEVER put any kind of girdle in a washing machine.

I wash my underwear in our frontloading washing machine on the same cycle as everything else (cool gentle wash, or some such). For what it's worth I threw out my first two Triumph Ideal Corselettes after they had each been worn day and night for 415 days, and during the day for another 430 days -- about two years and four months altogether. They were not worn next to my skin, and were washed once a week.
When I threw them out they had not obviously lost any strength, but were looking somewhat tired, with quite a number of broken Lycra threads, and several areas in the less durable cup replacements where most of the Lycra had failed.
If you're really interested, you can see the garments in question at
http://www.calectasia.com/Mens_corsets/Bunyip/Wardrobe.php but be warned that they look much as you would expect an old fossils garments to look.
